II. EXERCISES

Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography

In this exercise, we were tasked to pick a song and create a dynamic music video with our group. Our group members and I settled on the song "Last Surprise" by Lyn, which comes from a video game called "Persona 5".

To start, our parts were distributed. I was tasked to do verse 2 and intermission 1. Our original goal is to start off more simply and slowly be more flashy and experimental.

The game has a red, black, and white color scheme, which helped us greatly when settling on the color palette.

We also used the fonts directly used in the game. Font Download Link

After blocking out the lyrics for each section, I went to YouTube to find some basic tutorials

Exercise 5: Vector Animation

In this task, we were told to animate a vector that we were assigned previously. To start, I separated each layer that I wanted to animate.

Figure 3.2: Separated Layers

First of all, I wanted the car to move towards the people and stop in front of them. I separated the car into 3 separate layers: the body, wheel 1, and wheel 2. I then played around with the position tool to move the car. Next, I added the scale tool to make the people pop out, and I also moved the man's hand to make it seem like he's calling the car. Lastly, I made the clouds move to add some motion.

III. REFLECTION

Experience
For the kinetic typography exercise, I worked on verse 2 and intermission 1 of Last Surprise by Lyn. At first, it was difficult to sync the text with the music and create smooth transitions. However, using AE and following tutorials helped me understand how to animate text more effectively. Working in a group also helped ensure consistency in style and timing. In the beginning, it was quite difficult to coordinate what style to go for since we all have a different interpretation of the song.

Findings
I found that timing is very important in kinetic typography. The animation needs to match the rhythm of the song to feel natural. Using references such as the Persona 5 style also helped create a strong and consistent visual identity. Simple animations can still be effective if the timing and placement are done well.

Observation
I observed that as I used more of AE, it wasn't as daunting as I thought it would be. Small details like movement speed and text transitions made a big difference in the final result. Overall, kinetic typography requires both creativity and good timing to make the animation engaging.
