Exercise 3: Instructable Poster

Chosen Video:

We were tasked to choose a recipe from the YouTube channel @Pastagrannies, and I chose this recipe called  "How to make corzetti pasta with a creamy pine nuts & marjoram sauce".

After watching the video, I summarized all the steps and separated them into 3 clear phases. Since 1 and 3 were basically the same category, I combined them for the poster.

Process:

Originally, I came up with 3 different layouts. The first and second one is more organic in structure, while the third one is more rigid and neat. Since the teacher put an emphasis on clarity and structure, I decided to go for the third layout.

After deciding on the layout, I began to draw out the elements. Using procreate, I wanted the ingredients to look more sketchy and organic in style. I also avoided the vector style cause I didn't want a too rigid look. I drew all the pots/dishes from the top, and the rest of the ingredients from the side

Then, I moved everything into a new document and planned out the layout. After being satisfied, I moved all the assets into illustrator to add in the text and background.

When consulting with the teacher, he mentioned that the overall poster gave off more of a "fine dining" feel, so I decided to go with a blue background.

For the final consultation, the teacher also suggested that I change the font to something more interesting, and reposition the bottom dish to add a bit of a margin. Additionally, the empty area around the sides of the poster seemed unnecessary, so he also told me to widen each of the sections.

III. REFLECTION

Experience
I don't have much skill or experience in illustrating prior to this project, which made the process quite challenging at the beginning. Understanding proportions and how to color required extra effort and practice. However, using Procreate significantly improved my workflow, as it provided tools that made sketching and editing more manageable. Referring to visual references also helped guide my drawings and gave me a clearer direction throughout the project.

Findings
Through this project, I found that digital tools can greatly support beginners (like me) in developing artistic skills. Procreate offered features made it easier to experiment and learn.

Observation
I observed that as I worked more on the project, I saw gradual improvement in my drawing ability. At first, the process felt difficult and time-consuming, but over time, I became more comfortable with both the tools and techniques.
