III. EXPLORATION
Recap
For task 3, we are tasked to pick one of the 3 sketches we have
previously created in task 2 and develop it even further. We are
allowed to use any medium to create the final artwork. Support the
design with a 200-word rationale explaining the reason behind the
design, purpose, and design principles used.

After consulting with Mr Vinod, he said he also liked the draft
with the blank, dark background. He advised me to submit multiple
versions of the artwork.

Rationale
This design is a reimagination of the original artwork, infused
with fantastical elements to create a more whimsical atmosphere.
I was inspired by the movie "Arrietty" and the
fairytale "Thumbelina", both of which feature tiny humans
surrounded by a large forest. I wanted to capture a similar
sense of wonder and scale. While adding my own touches, I still
maintained the underlying narrative of the original
painting.
This design focuses on emphasis. The greenery appears
oversized, creating a lush, towering environment, while the
characters will be depicted on a smaller scale to create an
emphasis on them. The design follows
the gestalt theory’s principle of figure-ground,
where the background remains slightly blurred, allowing the
foreground elements to appear more prominent and distinct. To
further enhance this contrast, the characters have
vibrant colors. Additionally, the repetition of vines and
plants will introduce a sense of movement, making the
scene feel dynamic and immersive.
Symbolism is subtly woven into the use of flowers, each
carrying a deeper meaning. The lily of the valley, despite its
delicate and sweet appearance, harbors a poisonous side,
symbolizing the girl. Marigolds, often associated with grief,
and jealousy, hint at a husband’s suspicion of being replaced.
The moonflower, which blooms only at night, symbolizes a love
that thrives in secrecy.

IV. FEEDBACK
Week 6
General Feedback: Proceed with task 3
Specific Feedback: May proceed, a more vibrant/full artwork
would look better
Week 7
Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod preferred the plain background
as it had more contrast, and to add more surrounding foliage
to create more emphasis in the center area. But he said to
submit both versions.
V. REFLECTION
Experience
At first, I really struggled with this task. Since I picked a rather difficult painting, I questioned my ability to translate it effectively with my lacking drawing skills. Through a process of experimentation, I was able to gradually develop a design that I was satisfied with.
Observations
I found out that experimenting with different brushes can really add different textures and depth to a painting. Additionally, I learned that even the smallest details contribute to a richer, more meaningful composition.
Findings
Through this task, I gained a deeper understanding of how visual elements interact together to create a more complete artwork, and how each element and detail contributes to the composition.
