I. LECTURES

Week 1:
-

Week 2:
We were introduced to the Adobe Illustrator program and given our first assignment, the Vormator challenge. We were also given a way to practice the pen tool in Illustrator using the Bezier game.

Mr Hafiz also gave us the template and tutorials on making the Vormator shapes needed for our first assignment.

Week 3:
We were introduced to the shape builder and pathfinder tools on Illustrator and tasked to recreate part of the Adidas logo.

III. PROCESS WORK

Sketches and Ideas
Task 2 involves putting the character we made into a Pokemon card. As a fan of Pokemon, I wanted to create something inspired by their world. After researching my favorite Pokemon types, I realized that most are inspired by real-world animals, so I decided to create some sketches.

Figure 4: Research and Early Sketches

A few days later, I realized that I would have to create the character using the limited amount of Vormator shapes given, which would make it much harder for me to use my previous sketches. I ended up settling on a simpler animal, a mouse.

Using Procreate, I drafted up a very simple silhouette of what I wanted my character to look like. Since Pokemon usually have a theme/concept, I decided to make a sleepy mouse.

I was also inspired by the mouse species from the game Animal Crossing as they also have the art style I am going for.

Figure 6: Initial Sketch on Procreate

After transferring the sketch into Procreate, I had to recreate the shapes using the Vormator shapes that were available. For the head of the mouse, I had to use the wurst shape to create an almost circular shape. For the other parts of the mouse, I used mostly a combination of the drop, the tentacle, and the badge

After analyzing the mouse, I realized that it looked very unbalanced. I then remembered one of the pieces of advice Mr Hafiz gave us, which is about character shape. I wanted the mouse to be more jolly or happy, but also soft at the same time. The shape that fits that description is the circle. Circular characters tend to give off a warm or friendly feeling. I wanted the mouse to bring joy to those seeing it, thus my choice.

Using the circle as a guideline, I was able to make the mouse look more balanced and proportional. I also changed a lot of the elements, adding a nose to make the mouse look more realistic.

Final Work

After creating the base design for the mouse, I added extra detailing and accessories to help add extra personality to the mouse. Going along with the "sleepy" theme, I added a sleeping mask and droopier eyes. I also added paws and adjusted a bit of the ears to finish the entire design.

After finalizing the design, I decided on a name for it. Since the overall theme for this mouse is sleepiness or drowsiness, I wanted a name that is related to that theme. After browsing through the internet, I found the word "Momoe". "Momoe" means drowsy in the Samoan language. I thought that that word would be cute and well-fitting for the character, so that's what I settled with.

Reflection
As this is my first time using Illustrator, I feel proud of being able to create a solid character. Although I am not completely satisfied with the details and the symmetry of the shapes, I'm glad that I was able to learn a lot about the basics of using Adobe Illustrator, along with the shortcuts and features.
